More Information
The Jamison Valley Traverse is a true wilderness hike. Walkers should not be put off with the prospect of a rough track, as there are several routes covering parts of most of the Traverse. The hike can be tailored to suit various fitness levels and ability, with easier routes available. Contact the office if unsure. This trail is worth the effort.
Testimonials
Stunning, exhilarating (the slippy downy bits!), interesting - I learnt a lot about gum trees (eucalyptus), fun and I survived it.
We started on a stony track just on the outskirts of Katoomba and quickly began the descent into the bush along a well hidden path that was not overly used, which is a shame as it's such a good walk. The scrubby track changed into a scramble down into the denser woodland (rainforest) and we learnt very quickly to utilise all hand holds that were available to avoid tumbling or slipping down into the depths of the canyon. Steep is a good word; awesome and bloody mind boggling are also good words, I said them to myself lots of times on the way down! Down consisted of climbing along the vaguely defined track over trees, down rocky streams, hanging wildly onto usefully placed saplings and bits of rock.
The track wound it's way around the canyon, crossing the stream numerous times which was great as we got some fantastic views out into the Jamieson Valley. We circumnavigated (big word and I'm tired so I hope it's spelt OK) the side of the canyon weaving our way back and forth, up and down, all the time following the contours of the canyon walls.
Lunch was held further along the trail sitting on some well-placed rocks and was a feast fit for kings!
We saw a Lyre bird, an Owl, Cockatiels, Parrots and possible evidence of a larger animal - teeth and fur!). We also saw some stunning waterfalls, the trail actually went behind one which was rather superb.
All in all a great day, the walk took about 7 hours and was approximately 10-12 km long.
